Jacques Livage was born October 26 , 1938 at
Neuilly
sur Seine a suburban of Paris. After a PostDoc in 1969 at the University of Oxford (UK)
he became a full professor at the University of Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI).
In 1996 became a member of the "Institut Universitaire de France" and in 2001
professor at the "Collège de France".
For his outstanding contributions in the
chemistry of condensed matter and his pioneering work in sol-gel chemistry
Jacques Livage was elected in November 2001 member of the prestigious French Academy of
Science.
"The Paris Academy of Sciences has a long and prestigious
history.
Created in 1666 under the aegis of Colbert, the new institution provided a forum
to pursue meetings already initiated by various scholars who, working informally
with such figures as Mersenne, sought to free themselves from the uncertainties
of private patronage while ensuring the material means to indulge in their
research. The status of Royal institution was conferred upon the institution by
Louis XIV, who granted his protection to the Academy in 1699. Its history is one
of rich activity, not only in terms of history of science per se. The Academy
has at one time or another included the greatest French and many foreign
scientists among its members, many of whom have presented their best work there.
It is also prominent in the more general area of the political, economic and
social history of France."
