New
Sol-Gel manufacturing facility for large area coatings
April 20, 2001
A new Sol-Gel technological platform was inaugurated
February 2001, in
Saint-Etienne, France for the manufacturing of optical films for the needs of
the French National high power laser project.
The new facility which was initiated within the framework of the Megajoule
project and the Sol-Gel technology developed by the CEA (The French Nuclear
Energy Agency), is coordinated by Angenieux a subsidiary of Thales group
(Thomson-CSF), the optical center of GIAT Industries, and the Laboratory of
signal processing and Instrumentation of the Jean-Monnet University.
The principal objective of the new sol-gel facility will be to manufacture the
8700 m² AR and thin films needed for the different optical elements used by
this high power laser.
The facility has 700 m² lab space and 200m² of clean rooms of 10000 , 1000
and 100 class. The installed already equipment (Laminar flow, dip and spin
coating and the furnaces) were designed for large area coatings manufacturing.
The MegaJoule project it is expected to be completed by 2010 and its location
will be close to Bordeaux.
