The department of powder technology of the
University of Saarland is one of the leading German research groups in powder
processing for ceramics and glasses. The technology developed by Prof. Rolf
Clasen in the mid 80's for making bulk silica glasses from colloidal silica has
been continuously improved and adapted to satisfy specific needs for industrial
materials.
The lab has expertise on near-shape manufacturing with nanosized glass and
ceramic powders as well as material shaping via electrophoretic deposition.
Functionally graded glass-metal composites for lighting applications and
glass-metal junctions for microelectronics are typical examples of the
industrial realization of this applications oriented research group
