Objective
- Restauration of fragile documents (books, files) by a reinforcement process with
simultaneous deacidification of the paper
Coating Material
- coating sol prepared by the sol-gel nanocomposite technology, having a reinforcing
effect
Mechanism
- Reinforcement by establishing additional points of contact between the fibres through
the composite
- At the same time: building up of antiadhesive layers on top of each paper sheet and
preventing of the sticking together of pages
- Deacidification by buffering additives
|
Proceeding
- Dip coating of complete bounded books or files without previous remove of the binding or
previous vacuum predrying of documents (for papers with usual degree of humidity)
- Drying of the coating sol in a thermal furnace (no vacuum drying necessary)
Properties
- Remarcable strengthing of the paper
- Deacidification of paper and buffering of the acids that come up during aging
Applications
- Treatment of acid containing documents (books and files) produced after 1850 a. c. to
protect cultural asset.
- Advantages: books can remain in the bound state
- One step process for reinforcement and deacidification
