Objective
  • Protection of silver and silver-plated surfaces against tarnish and corrosion, especially the formation of silver sulfide according to:

2 Ag + H2S + ½ O2 ® Ag2S + H2O

Method

  • Coating of the surface with an inorganic-organic nanocomposite as a diffusion barrier against corrosive media

Results

  • Effective protection against corrosion even after mechanical damage of the coating
  • Increased wear and scratch resistance

  • Stability of the coating against environmental influences like humidity and UV-radiation
  • The material can be applied with commonly used coating techniques like spray-, dip- and flow-coating

Applications

  • Tarnish and wear protection of metals, e. g. silver, brass
  • Architectural applications
  • Household appliances

Benefits

  • Preservation of gloss and appearance of metals and metallized surfaces
