Objective
  • substitution of high heavy metal oxide containing glass frits for glass and metal decoration by a sol-gel derived SiO2 matrix

Methods

  • use of an inorganic coating sol developed already for the application of crackfree glasslike coatings on glass and metal with a thickness of up to 10 µm
  • incorporation of pigments such as TiO2, mica or metal powder
  • variation of the rheology of the coating material in order to meet the demands of various application techniques (spraying, dipping, screen printing)
  • firing in a tunnel furnace under enamel type of firing profiles

Results

  • preparation of coloured coatings with optical impression equal to enamel type of decorations
  • no change of production process necessary
  •

  • very good adhesion to the substrate according to cross cut / tape tests
  • excellent chemical durability according to Kesternich tests

Applications

  • decoration of glass (e. g. substitution of lead containing frits of etching processes)
  • decoration of metal with additional function of corrosion protection

Benefits

  • heavy metal free SiO2 matrix
  • harmless in ecological means
  • chemical resistant
  • possible incorporation of chemically sensitive pigments due to the lack of agressive glass melts
  • large variety of possible application techniques (spraying, dipping or screen printing)
  • no decrease in the strength of decorated glass due to adaptable thermal coefficient of expansions
