Objective
- Development of large area electrochromic displays (ECD) based on sol-gel techniques
Methods
- Preparation of functional coating systems on electrically conductive glass via sol-gel
techniques: Tungsten oxide electro- chromic layer, cerium oxide-titanium dioxide
intercalation layer, inorganic-organic nanocomposite electrolyte
- Construction of a display matrix by selective removal of conducting layer
Results
- A prototype display in the format of 500 x 500 mm has been assembled and
successfully tested
- Matrix: 7 x 7 Pixel, Pixel size 65 x 65 mm, active area 455 x 455 mm
- Switching times approx. 40 sec. (colouration), 25 s (bleaching) @ 2.0 V
|
Applications
- Large area display for advertisement, traffic signs, signalling devices
- Additional feature for smart windows: Optional presentation of symbols or text messages
Benefits
- The electrochromic display can be used either in transparent or reflective mode
- Information can be viewed in all ambient light conditions, including direct sunlight
- Visibility is nearly angle-independant
