Objective
  • Increase of the thermal stability of glass fiber fabrics and the products produced from by a sol-gel surface treatment

Methods

  • Sol-gel synthesis of coating materials (SiO2/ZrO2). Coating of the glass fiber fabrics by dip or spray techniques, followed by thermal curing (100 °C, 30 minutes)

Results

  • Improvement of the temperature resistance by more than 200 °C in comparison to uncoated or commonly used aluminum phosphate coated glass fiber fabrics (also under tensile or shear load)

Applications
  • Inexpensive high-temperature insulation materials
  • Asbestos substitution

Benefits

  • High flexibility of the coated fabrics and excellent adhesion of the coating under shear stress
  • Improvement of handling conditions for mechanical treatment (e. g. cutting)
  • Recyclable
