Objective
  • Preparation of plastic r-GRIN-lenses (Graded Refractive Index) with high refractive index amplitude and short production time

Method

  • in situ production of ZrO2-nanoparticles with high refractive index in a polymerizable matrix
  • formation of a refractive index gradient by variation of the concentration of the nanoparticles induced by electrophoresis
  • using of ring electrodes for the formation of the electrical potential inside of the electrophoretic cell
  • freeze in of the nanoparticle concentration profile by photopolymerization of the matrix

Results

  • parabolic concentration profile of the ZrO2-nanoparticles in bulk

  • parabolic refractive index gradient
  • GRIN lense with a refractive index amplitude of 7 . 10-2 , diameter of the lenses 0.9 cm and thickness about 1 cm
  • production time less than 6 hours

Application

  • adaptive optics
  • collimating elements
  • correction of aberrations in optical systems, cameras, lenses for microscopes

Benefits

  • high refractive index change
  • short production time
  • formation of different refractive index profils by variation of the electrode geometry
