Objective
  • Development of remeltable sol-gel powder coatings for coating applications

Method

  • Synthesis of inorganic-organic hybrid materials in the liquid phase via sol-gel process, which result in free-flowing meltable powders after a drying and grinding step

Results

  • The remarkable features of electrostatically applicable coating powders are their low melting temperatures of approx. 85 - 100 °C and minimal melting viscosities (1 - 15 Pa× s at T = 150 - 200 °C)
  • Properties of the transparent powder coatings:
  • Duroplastic after thermal densification
  • Coating thickness: 25 - 40 µm
  • Gloss (20°): 60 - 85 gloss units
  • Pencil hardness: 2H - 5H

  • High scratch- and abrasion resistance
  • Corrosion and weathering stability

Applications

  • Corrosion inhibiting coatings for:
  • Automobile industry
  • Architecture (e. g. facades)
  • Metal furniture
  • Household appliances

Advantages

  • Very good adhesion on metals
  • High mechanical resistance
  • Reduced material consumption because of low coating thickness
