DESCRIPTION

As-received and Vickers-indended soda-lime-silica microscope glass slides were coated and their strength was determined. SEM examination revealed that the coating penetrates deep into preexisting and/or artificially induced cracks, making strong bonds with its faces, resulting in significant increases of the glass strength. For the coated specimens, it was found that the strength level achieved was independent to the indentation crack size. The coatings were evaluated against industrial, large size bottles. The finding strength, increases similar to those of the laboratory specimens.


STATUS:  Available for demonstration. We are seeking industrial partners to develop the process.
