DESCRIPTION
The materials which were prepared and tested exhibited optical nonlinearity with a low value of saturation
intensity. The saturation intensities of specific dyes in glasses were
calculated, and the potential use of the materials for saturable absorbers was demonstrated in an extensive series of
experiments. Nano crystallites of a semi-conductor and metals are incorporated into glass films having wave guiding properties and high
nonlinearalities.
We are developing new materials for nonlinear optics based on sol-gel glasses and composite glasses. At present we have developed a number of materials which exhibit very low thresholds of saturable absorption. In future, these materials may be applied in optical
computing, holography and optical switches. The status of our research is such that
STATUS: Additional funding for research is
required.
