Sol-Gel

Diamond containing ceramic composites

DESCRIPTION

Industrial diamond occurs only as a powder which must be sintered or incorporated into a composite structure. By conventional processing, which requires high temperatures, this has been virtually impossible due to the fact that diamond graphitizes and oxidizes at 1000°C. Using the sol-gel route, which relies upon liquid polymerization at ambient temperatures, diamond powder can be incorporated into an initially wet solution and "gelled" in place.
