Topic: Sol-gel and nanodispersions Posted: 27 January 2007 at 5:20am
Hello,
i'm an italian student. I am looking for some notions about the nanodispersions in the sol-gel process. What is the difference with the traditional sol-gel method?

I'm interested in nanoparticles..
sincerely i don't know nothing about nanoparticles in sol-gel..i'd like to understand in which way nanoparticles can be employed in these materials.. thank you!!

Hi giallo,
sol-gel method a material matrix (Ex SiO2) forms a large network of
pores. The sizes of these pores can be tuned to be in the nanometer
range. Now you have to mix the salt solution of material (Ex any
metal or oxide) of which you want to form nanoparticles into the main
sol (remember much before gelling occurs) and mix them thouroughly. And
allow the sol to form gel. After this, the formed gel called
precursor consists of your desired material ions are arrested into the
nanopores of the matrix (SiO2). Now what is left to do is to evapourate
the solvent and also reduce/oxidise the metal/oxide precursor. This can
be done by heating in proper atmosphere..!!
So in short we have confined the metal/oxide crystals with in nanopores
of the matrix. Hence nanosize crystals of the desired material are
formed.
Hope I have been clear enough... else plz ask your questions specifically and I will try to answer..!!

Hi Ram007,
just one question. I want to what your research work is about? preparation of ZnO nanoparticles or just TEM observation for ZnO? because now I want to do some work about preparation of ZnO nanoparticles by sol gel method or disperse ZnO in some kind of solvent, would you or other person here can give me some advice if you are doing the same work? Thank you!

read some literatures and find out basic information regarding Sol -Gel. There you will find nearest compositions and processing conditions. Dr Ganguli (CGCRI) have lots of literature if you can find.
